Supplier Becomes Builder

After 19 years of living in Duncan, in our Pacific Home package (the Timbercrest), our family embarked on building a new home in Mill Bay. The first shovel went into the ground in late May of 2016 and we managed to move in just 4 days prior to Christmas. The house was custom designed by my wife and I and has now been named the “Shawnigan” package, which can be viewed in the Home Plan section of our Pacific Homes website. We worked with one of our very talented Pacific Homes’ architects, John Veuger, who offered informative building ideas, as well as displayed a lot of patience with my wife and I for making numerous design changes until we arrived at working drawings for our dream home.

I hired a professional contractor (Wade Berger from Tymak Construction), to install the concrete foundation as well as construct the home package. I did, however, personally pull the building permit and took on the task of general contracting the home myself. Taking on this responsibility of the project not only gave me the fulfillment of building my own home, but also saved thousands of dollars. Outside of my day job as general manager at Pacific Homes/Pacific Truss, I also spent most evenings cleaning the site, working with tradesmen, and even swinging a hammer the odd time. Taking on this project was no easy feat, however partnering with Pacific Homes made the project much less onerous. No project of this magnitude ever goes without an error or problem, however every step of the way, Pacific Homes offered support for the build. From Home Package Coordinators, Floor, Wall, and Truss designers, as well as shipping and administration staff, Pacific offered technical support as well as answered any questions that arose throughout the process.

As a staff member of Pacific Homes building his own home, it may not be entirely convincing for me to tell everyone how great we are. I can, however, tell you that the compliments that I received from the tradesmen that came through my project during the build process were very rewarding. From plumbers to heating contractors, drywallers to framers, every one of these tradesmen raved about the quality of the material and the “squareness” of the house that Pacific Homes supplied.

Our company originated in 1959, making it 58 years old in May. We have production staff that have been employed here for as long as 40 years. The longevity of our business and the quality of long term staff are truly an indication of the type of business that we are.
